Art often feeds off of a bigger narrative which is why it’s SO important to share what’s in your heart. Your story. Your vibe. Whatever makes YOU FEEL HUMAN. No matter who you are. .
Famous or not famous. Bloomed or still incubating. YOUR experience counts. It causes a ripple. .
And it sure as hell inspires someone somewhere to do something. .

I’ve been resisting tiny detailed landscapes. I wondered if I’d lost interest in them and was longing to rediscover the connection there.
.
As it often happens, I find the reason – not in pacing around the rock, frustrated at its presence on my path, for then no matter how much I pace, all I do is kick my toe against it . No, the discovery lies under the rock only to be found in turning it over, ready for whatever ant nest or shit fest comes crawling out over me. .
In the case of the detailed landscape paintings, I had to sit down and paint a landscape painting to see what was niggling behind it. 🙄
.
Sometimes I find inspiration. Sometimes I find closure. Today I found a mirror.
.
The jolt to paint came from a beautiful post and picture by the immensely talented silversmith @ringgoldnicole. She wrote about her wandering creative mind during a holiday in Mexico. I smiled in recognition of the artist habits that also bubble in me. And then I wanted to paint it. Not for the photo, but for the emotion it awoke in me.
.
Now, this may sound weird, but call it a message from the oceans (that I needed to hear too!!)
.
The tiny landscapes are works of patience. Without the undercurrent of emotion to keep me immersed in the waters or skies, grasslands and mountains, I simply don’t have the want to paint them.
.

To me, that’s the point of life. To discover that our individual expressions are sparks of iterations that leap from the collective fire – to make or be or share something that reflects more humanity and connection back to someone else.
.
So the next time you hesitate and wonder if what you have to say matters, trust the ocean, rain and fire. It will matter to someone. .

Has anyone else felt totally churned up inside by some aspect of chaos in their lives these last two days? Apparently, it’s all the waning Taurus moon’s fault. For me, the turbulence was all about the clutter. I just want less – less of everything. And the more I see the chaos the more I crave the space for peace and simplicity.â €
.â €
But I love that turbulent bubbling up energy inside me, because I know, stuff is about to reach a tipping point, changes are gonna be prioritised and new beautiful unfoldings will come from it.â €
.â €
I’ve always favoured the stormy skies. They’re so dynamic, and far more stimulating for the creative eye too. Cape Town you beautiful, beast.â €

Let me also be the master of my failures and the captain of my sorrow.

You know the last two lines of the Invictus poem by William Ernest Henley? “I am the master of my fate, the captain of my soul?” They’re often used as inspirational material to empower us towards our goals. But I think they’re only truly powerful in the context of the rest of the poem and I’m only beginning to understand what that’s about.â €
â €
And after reading it and standing on the end of this boardwalk (not literally – I tend to jump into my paintings while painting them), I decided to carry with me two more lines I want to never forget.â €
.â €
“I am the master of my failuresâ €
I am the captain of my sorrow”â €
.â €
My life has zigzagged down some dark and messy avenues. But standing at the end of the boardwalk looking into my own storm – I know that all those challenges propelled me onto the road I’m now walking – one I’m so grateful for. Our storms hold real power if we’re willing to look them in the face and thank them for what they’ve taught us instead of resenting them their pain. â €
.â €
I firmly believe if we can keep doing that – they just might fling us into who we’re meant to be.â €

Turns out It was a storm of convictions and goals and I’ve just had to sit with it, work through it (as in, keep working while the storm rumbled) and wait for it to pass on by.
.
So I decided to end the triptych off with some rays of light and me in my not so crowded house (if my house were a barn 😂). The thing I often have to hold on to is, I can’t escape my weather patterns. Just gotta let them clouds tumble on over and trust the sun is still blazing somewhere far in the distance. Head down, and hustle that paintbrush!

My spidey senses are tingling today. Maybe it’s lingering excitement, maybe it’s residual rain weather vibes, but I was drawn to this landscape (and it’s part 1 of another triptych) so.. my gut is telling me… a storm is a-comin’. And not the literal kind. Off to make a huge cup of tea and smudge some sage.
.
Stay cozy & listen to that gut whisper!
