‘Awarewolf’ – Day 298/365

Continuing the Halloween inspired countdown of Scary Reasons Not To Pursue Your Craft (and how I’m facing and learning from these monsters)
.
Reason No. 6:

Being judged for not being “where you should be by now.”
.
It’s hard deviating from the publicly accepted norm. I worried that if I jumped in now at age 32 to pursue a thing I felt could be my thing (because when is there ever certainty) and got off the corporate ladder climbing track that saying sayonara to the sizable monthly cheque would mean putting a definite and maybe permanent hold on the ‘maybe house’, ‘maybe kids’ and or occasional travel.
.
But then what would any of those structures in my life mean if it wasn’t framed around a life I wanted to be in?
.
So in asking myself where exactly it was that I should be I tapped into the powers of the werewolf, a much-maligned creature, that often finds itself transforming when it’s less than ideal to do so.
.
How can the creative pursuit benefit from this?
.
By becoming an awarewolf. Deep down you know what really matters to you. If you let that awareness guide you, you’ll be less in the orbit of other deemed important planets, and far happier traipsing around howling at your own moon.
.
Aaarooooooh🐺

Sidenote: ‘awarewolf’ is a fun term that popped in my head but that I don’t claim to have coined – found some fun brands out there rocking the term 💁🏼‍♀️ Just wanted to throw that out there. ✌🏼

Even on the longest, gentlest path with plenty of room for company, the challenge is not in the terrain, the exertion or record time accomplishment, but in choosing to keep walking the path in your ultimate solitude, for no other reason, than the inner compulsion to stay true to the path, waiting to uncover why it called you in the first place.

‘Pain Steaking’ – Day 241/365

‘Pain Steaking’ – Day 241/365

ORIGINAL COPY POSTED ON INSTAGRAM DURING THE CHALLENGE

I painted today’s miniature with a renewed return of the unbearable ache under my scapula. My sacrifice of daily repetition.
.
To say I eeked this one out is an understatement. It took me thrice as long because of all the distractions I navigated towards. The whole thing was f&^%$ painstaking.
.
As I painted alongside this pain, all I felt burning in my shoulder were the woods, the woods, the endangered wild woods.
.
And all I hear was hungry capitalism burning them down for a beef industry that feeds the world’s mass meat-eaters with distraction while they profit from destruction.
.
While the sacrifice of my daily repetition is only my chosen burden to bear and wholly worthwhile, I believe, in the long run – the daily repetition of eating meat and turning a blind eye on your part in feeding the monster that burns our forest is not a sacrifice our planet chose or can recover from.
.
And that’s the P A I N – S T E A K I N G reality of our burning, burning, wild woods.
.
Please choose reduction, choose less mass-farmed animal agriculture. Choose Amazonia.

‘Reaching Redwoods’ – Day 200/365

‘Reaching Redwoods’ – Day 200/365

An acorn doesn’t grow into a giant oak because it plans on providing shade, carbon-sequestering services and roosting branches for birds. It simply creates itself into the only thing it knows to be. The shade and oxygen and animal life shelter are the results of an acorn becoming an oak.
.
Do your creative work because it’s in you, innate to only you. Do it because that is you being fully you in your present state.

People have been asking me a lot what the point of this whole challenge is – like what am I hoping for? And to tell you the truth, I have no idea. Well let me rephrase – I have many dreams and ideas but no attachment to them. I’m just curious and excited and filled with conviction.
.
But it’s not an answer people seem satisfied with. So today I thought about it this way:
.

Thoughts on trees and my inability to tire of painting them are stirring truths in me about other questions I’ve grappled with for a long time now. But I am unable to sort them into some sense of cohesion today.
.
Something in John Muir ‘s words feel close enough for now, “The clearest way into the universe is through a forest wilderness.”
