I left this painting a little late today (thank you other deadlines and procrastination for handing me my ass on a platter). Merrily painting away, thinking about my last trip to Kgalagadi National Park and these stunning Gemsbok sightings, I nearly forgot about the darkness I would soon be plunged into. Photographing paintings at night is no fun. So this Gemsbok was literally painted in a race against the sun. .
Quick – Sunday night smarty pants points (No Googling) for anyone who knows the other name of this beautiful buck? And the delicious sustainable SA product that goes by the same name?

‘Yin Yang Sand’ – Day 68/365

We’re always seeking that ‘sitting in the sun’ attitude. But facing your shadows and being a little colder there is just as necessary if you don’t want your spirit to wither up like a raisin.

Every side that basks in sun has a shadow side not far behind. We have a tendency to seek and approve only of a sitting in the sun attitude, but facing your shadow and being comfortable there is just as necessary for the soul if you don’t want your spirit to end up like a wrinkly raisin. 😌

‘Paint it black’ – Day 67/365

The desert, for those with the patience to look through the apparent desertion, will make you hear what’s most present within.

I barely ever touch my black pigment, always favouring Payne’s grey for richer darkness. But this landscape called for an almost barren pigment. And I just Ioved the irony of that, that you sometimes need an absence of intensity to really awaken the life of a process or in this case, a deeply alive landscape that is often perceived as void of life.

“There is a desert
I long to be walking
A wide emptiness.
Peace beyond any
understanding of it.”
