The Burn has some strange and profound ways of bringing deep wounds and healing space into your…well, your Binnekring (Burn pun and also ‘inside circle’ in Afrikaans).
.
My lovely ticket gifter, when told that I would like to paint her best memory as a thank you for her ticket, decided to honour the still-developing creative in me, and simply said “Paint what comes to you under the theme ‘Death and Rebirth’. This was a relevant theme for her, because of her work in safe birth practices.
.
I held space for this concept in the desert and waited for the painting to come to me.
By Sunday’s Clan burn, my spirit was ripe for some unfolding, and through a series of interesting events, I arrived at this point in the night, with a sobbing heart, and a shaking grip on reality. I was reliving the loss of my dad as a little girl. In the miasma of light-adorned humans, I let him go all over again. The wind exhaled hard over the burning structure. As I watched the side-swept flames turned into long, fiery feathers. My Phoenix was emerging.
.
I don’t think healing from the death of a loved one will ever be a linear journey. As we move through our lives, maybe edging closer to our own deaths, we’ll be offered many chances to revisit the truths that lie in it. If Death were a guru I imagine her to be a Phoenix Being with pendants to lay over your head as you find acceptance for her many teachings. And on this night, by this fire, I found the courage to rise higher by letting go of his sleeping hand.
.
Swipe to see the pendant that came to me in the desert. Synchronicity like that makes my heart glow hard, people! (you can’t see it hear – the pendant is of a feather that says ‘burn’ in cut out letters)

@fieldsofdaisy this is your painting. Thank you for my gift into the desert.

This is the last of my three paintings done at the burn – but I have a confession to make. I only started the background at the burn and then had to pack the paint kit away on Saturday afternoon because the dust storm that came through was REAL, guys. So I completed this little guy today, and not being at the burn anymore, decided to gift it to a friend who has never been but is eager to experience her magic. This is Andries. ⠀
.⠀
I gave him the final burn gift of the Karoo road (R355) at sunrise and asked him to name her what going to the burn would mean for him. It certainly marked new beginnings for me and I’m sure it will for him too.

Tankwa is a great place to recharge your spirit and your heart. But it’s also a beautiful recentering of how you’re shaping your life. After a magical artwork stroll, I headed back to camp to paint another desert miniature – fully recharged with creative energy. I got thinking about the phrase ‘making a living’ and how, while I might not be there yet, there is such joy in literally using your hands to make – create, build, shape, craft – to make your living, that is the essence that sustains you both financially and emotionally.⠀
.⠀
During a dance session on Sunday, I got chatting to this groovy character. His name is Jacques and he’s a Jack of all trades – a builder. We connected over the material art of “making a living” – the hard work, the labour and the reward of pouring of your physical self into your work. I waved him goodbye with this painting, Saturday’s child, in his pocket – because Saturday’s child works hard for a living.⠀

It was like the desert knew whom to bring me for my gifts. Lekker.

Some people cross your path to give you direction. Others give you hope. And yet some even give you the feeling that you’re on the right track. This is James. We had a lovely conversation about tiny art and just this simple act gave me the feeling of being seen and acknowledged for the big little tiny things I see and paint.⁣

I gifted James my Friday painting of this colourful crowd grooving in the desert beside the spirit train. He is now the parent of ‘Friday’s child’ – a painting destined for the spirit of loving and giving. ⁣

Do you believe in the ways of the Universe? I do. With every fibre of my being…Here’s a little story to share her language with you.⁣
.⁣
We were desperate to go to the burn this year, but my financial and time commitment to my paintings didn’t allow for the funds to head to the dust. But still, I thought I’d put a call out to the Universe and see what magic might unfold and so I actioned a few posts and ads on Instagram and Facebook offering paintings for tickets. Then a Reddit post came my way of someone wanting to gift their ticket. I responded to the post with my heart’s reasons for seeking more desert magic and an opportunity to thank her for reawakening my creative fire.⁣
.⁣
As life would have it, another wonderful human saw my post, contacted me directly and she and her friend gifted us their tickets. I’m still in total awe and reverence of the Universe! Our ticket gifters didn’t know about my offering paintings in exchange so my delight at being able to thank them with tiny art is overflowing!⁣
.⁣
The law of attraction is a beautiful thing, but Oprah says it most succinctly: “People get to where they want to go, because they know where they want to go.” ⁣
.⁣
So for the next 4 days, our true-to-the-Karoo hearts are going to the desert, baby – to soak up the magic and gift some tiny paintings!⁣
.⁣
Real-time me will be back on Monday. I’ve opted for social media scheduling so I don’t bombard you with 4 days of paintings while we’re disconnecting in the dust.⁣
.⁣
Love and light to you all, beautiful humans (hope you find some of your own fire and try talking to the Universe in pursuit of your own dreams!)⁣
