A story for the Last Day of the 365 challenge before the reveal later 😋

Today’s painting, my not quite as mini, miniNature, is dedicated to my love.
.
To those who have followed this journey, it may look like I did 365 paintings alone, but the truth is, we did it together. .
Vic, my babe, I could never in a million lifetimes have achieved something like this without you. Not without your willingness to make 332 miniature frames (I started with only enough for a few weeks) because I refused to buy plastic wrapped canvases off Amazon made in China and flown half way around the world!
.
Not without your endless kind words of encouragement or your willing support of breaking and making my own rules along the way (today included).
.
I couldn’t have done it without your daily ‘that’s awesome, my love’ assurance of every damn painting (even the ones that were lacking in the heart).

And not without your quiet company in the studio on days that I struggled. I couldn’t have done it without your financial support in months where work was slow. Or without your back rubs and heart hugs in weeks where it all felt like too big and too dumb a challenge to take on. .
The whole challenge may have crystallised my understanding of the ‘no mud, no lotus’ analogy for the symmetry of artistic existence, but you never needed the challenge to love all my mud moments as much as my lotus moments. You’ve pushed me to grow more than you know.
.
You’re my diamond from the dust and I’m ‘vrek’ grateful we’re in this together. 🙏🏼
.
✨Undertakings like this cannot be done without those who love us, the parents who root for us (thanks mom and Steve!!!) and the friends who believe in us with SO much love and kindness.✨
.
I took me the better part of 12 months to fully learn this: 💙the people in your life, WANT to be there for you.💙
.
Not everyone is that fortune, so if you are – let your friends and family support you in chasing your dreams. You’re depriving yourself of the chance to feel major love, abundance and joy for everything you already have before you achieve any goals.
.
I want to say a massive thank you to all the nature photographers who kindly let me use their images this year as sources to my inspiration. You did a majorly generous thing and I will always be grateful to you all.

And NOW – You glorious gems!!! To every single human who stuck around while I did this thing, who commented, who engaged, who liked and who shared my work, fuck man, I want you to know how much I appreciate you. You all occupied invisible space in my tiny studio, encouraging me onward with your genuine messages of kindness and appreciation.
.
If I could hug every single one of you, I would. 🤗It was never about reaching numbers for me. It was about gathering connections along the way.
If you’re reading this now, on 31 Dec 2019 – you are part of the number that helped me see this year through. That pretty much makes you the biggest number my heart could ask for or handle.😍

I am bursting with content ideas (and more) for 2020, and I can’t wait to get cracking on creating it all, in hopes of inspiring more creatives to chase their magical dreams.
.
THANK YOU again. 🙏🏼💙✨🌈
.
🙏🏼💙 Have a wonderful new year and be kind to yourself. This is the only moment you’ll ever get 🌱🌞
.
From my wild heart to yours,
Thank you!

‘Un-wavering’ – Day 336/365 – R2100

‘Un-wavering’ – Day 336/365 – R2100

The word unwavering washed over me today.  “To be steady and resolute”. Nothing stops the waves from spilling into shore and crashing on the beaches. Every second of every day, the ocean makes her waves and brings them to shore. But they’re not always big, massive gnarly waves. Some days they’re gentle crests, some days soft ripples and other days when it looks like a barely visible stir, her soft swell is still there.
.
Her waves take a great many forms. But in being the ocean – she is unwavering.
.
The ocean-inspired lesson is that to be unwavering in your commitment doesn’t mean having to roll out the big waves every damn day.

So here’s day 336’s painting on day 336.
.
It’s not actually complete (let’s see who can spot what’s missing) but in keeping with the previous post – it is ‘calmplete’.
.
I had an ocean gifted aha moment sitting @wavescapesa earlier this evening listening to all the fantastic and inspiring speakers.
.
They were all so committed to their work. And the word unwavering washed into my mind. What does that mean? “To be steady and resolute”. Now get this – nothing stops the waves from spilling into shore and crashing on the beaches.
But in being the ocean – she is unwavering.
.
I don’t know where I got the notion in my head that every day requires my 150 % (or maybe I do….) but I’m loving this ocean-inspired lesson and insight that I can be unwavering in my commitment while not having to roll out the big waves every damn day. ✌🏼
.
.
.
Now who can tell me what detail I still need to paint in on this one?

‘Many Drops, One Ocean’ – Day 324/365 – R1900

‘Many Drops, One Ocean’ – Day 324/365 – R1900

Art often feeds off of a bigger narrative which is why it’s SO important to share what’s in your heart. Your story. Your vibe. Whatever makes YOU FEEL HUMAN. No matter who you are. .
Famous or not famous. Bloomed or still incubating. YOUR experience counts. It causes a ripple. .
And it sure as hell inspires someone somewhere to do something. .

I’ve been resisting tiny detailed landscapes. I wondered if I’d lost interest in them and was longing to rediscover the connection there.
.
As it often happens, I find the reason – not in pacing around the rock, frustrated at its presence on my path, for then no matter how much I pace, all I do is kick my toe against it . No, the discovery lies under the rock only to be found in turning it over, ready for whatever ant nest or shit fest comes crawling out over me. .
In the case of the detailed landscape paintings, I had to sit down and paint a landscape painting to see what was niggling behind it. 🙄
.
Sometimes I find inspiration. Sometimes I find closure. Today I found a mirror.
.
The jolt to paint came from a beautiful post and picture by the immensely talented silversmith @ringgoldnicole. She wrote about her wandering creative mind during a holiday in Mexico. I smiled in recognition of the artist habits that also bubble in me. And then I wanted to paint it. Not for the photo, but for the emotion it awoke in me.
.
Now, this may sound weird, but call it a message from the oceans (that I needed to hear too!!)
.
The tiny landscapes are works of patience. Without the undercurrent of emotion to keep me immersed in the waters or skies, grasslands and mountains, I simply don’t have the want to paint them.
.
It causes a ripple. .
And it sure as hell inspires someone somewhere to do something. .
To me, that’s the point of life. To discover that our individual expressions are sparks of iterations that leap from the collective fire – to make or be or share something that reflects more humanity and connection back to someone else.
.
So the next time you hesitate and wonder if what you have to say matters, trust the ocean, rain and fire. It will matter to someone. .

🎃Happy Hippy Halloween Everyone!🎃
.
The last 7 days of reflection about scary reasons not to pursue your creative path have, in a strange way given me one final realisation, and to me, this one felt a bit like a gift from the universe.
.
The scariest reason behind pursuing your creative path is the willingness to believe that your worth lies in that one idea you can’t stop thinking about.

And do it despite what all the “that’s not a real job” boogie monsters say.
.
As Cheryl Strayed puts it. “Trusting yourself means acting out what you already know to be true.”

The final reason in my 7 day Halloween Inspired countdown to not pursue your creative path.
.
Reason No 1. What if the tedium kills me?
.
This might sound like a strange one at first, but let me share 2 quick things about me that will help you understand where this fear came from.
1. I overthink things to a very deep level – and thus I can sort of envision or live quite far into a scenario before any of it has actually happened.
2. I get bored very easily. Not in the ‘there’s nothing to do sense’ – there is ALWAYS so much that could be done. Rather in the ‘once I’ve gotten a sense of something or figured it out’ I want to move onto the next challenge.
.
So I foresaw the pockets of time where it would just be a matter of sticking to it and plodding along, itchy feet be damned. And that was scary for me – not being able to bolt in another direction.
.
But tedium doesn’t kill. Dracula does a lot of waiting around, also in a fairly confined box. But you know what does kill him? A stake through the heart. The stake being the less fulfilling job you stay in wishing you were in the box of your craft. Because even when you’re dealing with some tedium at least its a tedium of your choosing.
The super macabre analogy that gets you through it is drinking up the blood that is your creative life force. .
I think that’s kind of cool – you keep you alive. You doing you keeps your heart beating.
.
And so far, the really awesome connections and awakenings I’ve had through this painting challenge totally see me through the days where I’m just bored and over it AF. 😜
