Being a fairly introspective Halloween baby, this is around about the time I start reflecting on what this year has meant for me personally as I approach turning another year older. For me 2019 has definitely been about staring down the monsters that hide in the creative’s closet and, not only dispelling my resistance around them, but learning to be creative within their presence.
So, I thought I’d do a little 7-day Halloween-inspired countdown of Scary Reasons Not To Pursue Your Creative Path (and how to instead learn from and make friends with these monsters).
Reason no. 7:
🎃Being strapped for cash while you try to make a go of it and possibly ending up dead broke down the line.
I figured if Zombies can get by ‘dead’, then I’ll figure out how to get by “dead broke”. So far so good. As it turns out artists can feed off of brains too. Brain fuel that is – ie. using your brains and being resourceful. I’ve made it work with various side gigs to pay basic bills, accepting help when offered (this one was rather hard for me) and living with a LOT less (not as hard as you’d think).
Tada – the undead artist is born.
