Usually, my monochrome paintings are made up of a variety of colours even though they appear as one tone. So a miniNature in rust earth tones will contain red oxide, ochre, burnt umber, titanium white and probably Payne’s grey.

With this one, I thought I’d explore the result of using only Payne’s grey and white.

Very difficult indeed to create some significant nuance. But it just goes to show, even when things appear black and white, they never are. In fact, much of the joy and the pain in anything lingers in the many shades in between.
